President Casey

President Casey earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and economics at the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated summa cum laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. At Notre Dame Casey was elected captain of the varsity swim team and was awarded the Scholar Athlete of the Year award. Casey then went on to earn a law degree from Stanford University where he was an editor of The Stanford Law Review. He joined Davis Polk & Wardwell and practiced law in New York City and London. After several years of practicing law, President Casey attended Harvard University, where he earned a PhD in the history of American civilization.

Casey spent four years as assistant provost at Brown University, and in 2005 he returned to Harvard as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He served in that capacity until he was appointed president of DePauw University in 2008 serving as that school’s 19th president. Casey was then appointed º£½ÇÉçÇø’s president on July 1, 2016.

President Casey has accomplished much at Colgate, including the construction of several major new buildings: two 100-bed residence halls, Jane Pinchin Hall and Burke Hall; a new center for careers and postgraduate study, Benton Hall; two large academic buildings including a center to house film and media studies, music, and computer science; and a new downtown project to house faculty and staff. Through The Colgate Commitment, under Casey’s watch federal student loans have been eliminated from most student’s financial aid packages. Fourteen new endowed chairs have been raised and the University has launched two major academic initiatives – one in Mind, Brain, Behavior and the other in Arts Creativity and Innovation.

President Casey, along with senior administrators, the Board of Trustees, and the University Faculty, have developed a comprehensive vision for Colgate titled the Third-Century Plan, which sets a long-term course for the University. Through the Third-Century Plan, Colgate has undertaken significant new investments in students, faculty, and the campus. Applicants have nearly tripled since Casey’s arrival and the University is more than two-thirds of the way through completing a $1 billion fundraising campaign, the largest such campaign among the nation’s liberal arts colleges.
